Are you looking to be a tutor, or would your child benefit from having a personal tutor without having to schlep them all over town? The options online these days is endless. Here is my personal review of the Wyzant tutoring website and app.
Online Tutoring
Tutoring has come a long way in the past few years. When I was a kid you had to have your mom drive you to a library or some other public place to meet one on one with somebody who would help you with your homework. I lived right next to a college town, so finding tutors wasn’t hard. These days however, it doesn’t matter where you live you can access qualified tutors anytime, and from anywhere you have an internet connection.
These days one of my all-time favorite ways to make money online is helping college students with their term papers. I get to feel like I am actually using my degree while also getting to stay home and be the primary influence on my own kids. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Want to become a tutor?
I have worked with two companies online as a tutor: Varsity Tutors and Wyzant. They both have their pros and cons, today I am going to discuss my thoughts on the Wyzant app.
My favorite pro is obvious: I get to work from home and can schedule my days around my kids activities. If we are busy at certain times of the day or certain weeks are crazier than others, I can adjust my availability schedule accordingly. My biggest con with online tutoring: it’s not very consistent. If this is something you are looking to be able to replace a full-time job, then I would exercise caution and really feel it probably cannot be counted on as full-time income.
Students are poor and busy, so they might reach out needing a tutor, but when the time comes to it they wait too late at the last minute, or just run out of cash. I remember my undergrad days and it always seemed like the late night pizza runs seemed to eat up what little cash I had!
Aside from the fact that I wouldn’t set up your finances in such a way that you are 100% reliant on tutoring to pay your bills, you can definitely earn some decent cash – and getting started is super easy. The thing I like best about the Wyzant app for tutoring is that you don’t really need to “apply” like a job (and like the other site I use, Varsity). On the flip side of that you also need to do all your own marketing and networking…which I am not very good at!
When you create your free account, you set it up like a social media profile with your picture and little bio all about you. Don’t worry about getting this step right, I am still tweaking my profile from time to time!
